Maryland Arts Day featured Dr. Limb and his research on creativity and the brain.  What an incredible day.

Maryland is no longer asking for level funding but for a 2 million dollar increase.  This will take us to a budget level of 2008 when we weigh in inflation.

The tone is a good one and it feels like forward movement.

We continue to build.

It's a big day and anyone who wants to become an advocate for the arts can do it easily on line by going to the Maryland Citizens for the Arts webpage.

I'd like to reiterate this...

Vision:

To create a thriving arts community. We are committed to embracing professional artisans within our unique, sustainable city to celebrate art and the creative process. It is the goal of this district to facilitate innovative and strong professional collaborations which will create sustainable jobs for artists and other residents in the community. We aim to use the arts as a central tool for economic development to preserve our unique walkable historic Main Street and riverfront.

...onward...

At Noon today we had the fourth gathering to discuss the arts district!  Deb, Marvin, Maureen, Miriem, Lindsey, Gail, and Abbie were in attendance.

Randy had a machine problem.  Matthew was busy.  Marilyn was on a huge deadline.  And, Karl was in an unexpected extended meeting.

Today we each spoke about our own organizations and what it would mean to have an arts district.  We discussed obstacles and came up with some actions as well.

Overall, we agreed that culture and history are great things!  We need more and more and more. We want a place that has a bit of a foot traffic bustle to it.  Somewhere that people decide to venture to for a fun and incomparable afternoon or evening.  We want to educate about the history of this mill town in exciting ways and we'd love to fill storefront windows with art work.

We continue to believe that the more people invest in our individual organizations and activities, the more the entire community will benefit.  We notice a bit of repeating efforts and want to find a way to invest in a real communication hub so we don't waste energy on duplicate efforts when there really is so much to be done.

The subject of signage and maps continues to come up in our conversations.  It is difficult to have a presence when we can't be found.  We'd like support and incentives to help us attract attention to our good work.

Conversely, we want to roll things out as an arts district in a manageable way realistically considering the resources at hand.

We'd like to begin outdoor arts festivals in 2012.  Starting in April at the latest and perhaps monthly on first Fridays?

We'd like to utilize the winter months for at least one meet and greet gathering of nonprofits and arts organizations.  The intention behind this is to create an environment of exchange and reciprocity.  The theme and advanced preparation to be focused around:

What would YOU love to SEE, GET, GIVE?

We'd also like to begin a Main Street Arts District Directory.  Specifically for the Quality Inn so that people staying in rooms there have a simple pamphlet that will encourage them to venture beyond Route One.

We hope to meet again Wednesday December 4, at Noon.
